How to check for canine scabies:

1. Understand the medical history, observe and distinguish clinical symptoms: focus on distinguishing food allergies, flea allergies and environmental allergies.

2. Positive ear-foot reflex: rub the thickened part of the ear, and if the sick dog responds by scratching the ear with the hind foot on the same side, it is positive ear-foot reflex. A positive ear-foot reflex in the presence of thickened ear margins generally suggests canine sarcoidosis with up to 80% accuracy.

3. Microscopic examination of skin scraping (shallow scraping): Check for scabies mites, nymphs and eggs. False negatives are common, and the detection rate of scabies mite skin scrapings is only 20%. The best sampling location is the boundary between the elbow lesion area and the normal area, and the edge of the ear.

4. Serology: Detect the immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody against scabies mite antigen in the circulation. This detection has high specificity and sensitivity.

Treatment for canine scabies:

1. Selamectin 6~12mg/kg, once every 2 weeks, at least 4 times.

2. Oral treatment or subcutaneous injection of ivermectin 0.2~0.4mg/kg, orally once every 7 days, subcutaneous injection once every 14 days, continuous treatment for 4~6 weeks.

3. Subcutaneous injection of doramectin 0.2~0.6mg/kg, once every seven days, continuous treatment for 4~6 weeks.

4. Mebemycin oxime, 0.75mg/kg dose, orally, once every 24 hours for 30 days. Or 2mg/kg dose, orally, once every seven days for 3 to 5 weeks.
